What U.S. Employers Value Most in Your Communication

image

If you’re joining a U.S.-based law firm, especially remotely, here’s a truth you don’t hear often enough: your communication skills can make or break your success.
You might excel in other aspects of your role, but if your emails are confusing, your calls are awkward, or you don’t keep people informed, your work won’t receive the credit it deserves.
So, what do law firms mean by “good communication”? Is it just being polite or choosing the right words? Those matter, but it goes deeper.
Let’s break it down by sharing five things U.S. employers value most about communication and how you can improve in each area.
1. Be Clear and Precise
We’ve all stared at an email response that leaves us wondering what’s really going on. We thought we’d explained enough, but somehow the questions keep coming.
Perhaps our email was too vague. Was our message clear enough? If not, we could cause delays and frustration.
So, instead of writing, “I’m working on the issue,” say, “I reviewed the contract and will update clause 3 by tomorrow at 1 p.m.”
2. Adapt Your Tone for Different People
You’ll likely communicate with clients, managers, and team members. However, depending on the person, each conversation needs a slightly different approach.
For clients, use polite, clear, and professional language: “I understand your concern. Here’s the next step.”
Also, for coworkers, consider a more casual, collaborative tone: “Can you confirm the filing date? I’ll prepare the draft.”
On calls, repeat important points to ensure everyone gets it: “So, you need the brief by Friday?”
3. Summarize Important Information First
Sometimes emails have a lot of information, and it can be hard to tell what the main point is. Because people working in law firms are busy, they want to know the important part first. Say what matters right away. For example:
Summary: “Client agreed to settlement.”
Details: “They signed today, and I’ll send final documents by 3:00 p.m.”
This helps readers see the main point right away. In addition, they can decide if they need more information.
4. Mind Your Tone, Especially in Writing
Have you ever read an email and thought, “Wow, that sounded way harsher than I expected”? Without seeing your face or hearing your voice, emails can come across as colder than intended. Before you send it, read it as if you’re the tired person on the receiving end.
For example, adding a quick “Please let me know if you have any questions” or “Thanks for your patience” can turn a cold message into a polite, friendly message.
5. Always Double-Check Your Work
Spelling and grammar mistakes make people doubt your professionalism. Always proofread before pressing send.
In law firms, details matter a lot. Also, paying attention to small things builds trust. This shows people you care about quality and respect their time.
Why Does This Matter?
Clear communication matters because it saves time and avoids mistakes. Misunderstandings can cause delays and sometimes loss of clients.
For instance, no one can read your mind. If you don’t explain your ideas well, others won’t understand or value your work.
Finally, strong communication skills help you work better with clients and colleagues, especially when you’re not in the same room.
