The Department of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCD) is responsible for global leadership, coordination, guidance, and technical support to reduce premature mortality and morbidity from NCDs, burden of sensory impairments and oral health through prevention and integrated service delivery, treatment, surveillance, rehabilitation, monitoring and research. The Department also lead WHO's work on disability. The department provides overall coordination and brings together the work on NCD prevention, control, and rehabilitation from across the departments and from the three levels of the organization. It coordinates reports to the WHO and UN governing bodies and is the main interlocutor on NCDs. The department assist and support regions and countries in their efforts to provide a country-centered, concerted and coordinated action to strengthen health systems to respond to NCDs, oral diseases and sensory impairment. The department also ensure linkages between primary and secondary prevention using technical packages and harnessing innovation and use of technology including Be Healthy Be Mobile.

Job Responsibilities

  • Support the global initiative on the prevention and control of cardiometabolic diseases and kidney diseases and represent WHO in global fora.
  • Develop/adapt evidence-based strategies, guidelines, and toolkits to assist Member States in the planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes for the detection and management of cardiometabolic diseases using an integrated and public health approach.
  • Coordinate with relevant WHO technical units and guide the implementation of the global programme for CVD/diabetes/kidney diseases prevention and control in countries.
  • Develop, expand and sustain international partnerships on the relevant disease area.
  • Provide technical advice and support to countries on kidney diseases prevention and management, including kidney replacement therapies in stable and humanitarian settings- in close collaboration with WHO Regional and Country Offices.
  • Support the development of advocacy and communications products on kidney diseases prevention and control.
  • Support and strengthen WHO's work on access to essential quality medicine and technologies relevant to CVD/diabetes management, including for kidney diseases prevention and control.
  • Manage budgets and develop project proposals.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Other Educational Qualification

A university degree in medicine with an advanced level degree in internal medicine, public health or family health.

Skills

  • At least 7 years of relevant experience in health systems or public health related to CVD/diabetes/kidney diseases prevention and control.
  • At least 3 years of evident international work exposure.
  • At least 10 publications on CVD, diabetes or kidney diseases in peer-reviewed journals.
  • At least 3 years providing support for implementation of kidney diseases prevention and control programmes in primary care settings at country levels in low- and middle- income countries.
  • At least 2 years of experience working with inter-agency initiatives and multi-disciplinary groups, national, international and non-governmental organizations, preferably working in WHO or the UN system or relevant international health/ development bodies.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Able to coordinate, plan and implement projects and activities with minimum supervision but work equally well as part of a team.
  • Manage and expand global partnerships and programme implementation in countries through partners.

  • USD: 5413 (Monthly)

Additional Salary Info

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 77,326 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 5413 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
