Torture cell for job seekers found in Mymensingh
Fraudsters carried out inhumane torture at the cell to extort ransom by detaining job seekers after providing lucrative advertisements in newspapers

Police have found a windowless torture cell inside a mysterious house on the banks of the Brahmaputra River in Mymensingh's Gouripur upazila.
Last Friday, police raided the house, located in Bhangnamari union of the upazila, and arrested four brothers in a case filed by a victim, said Officer-in-Charge Shah Kamal Akand of Kotwali police.
The next day, they were sent to jail through a court.
The arrestees are Sabikur Rahman alias Shafiq Master, 34, Shahjahan Mia, 35, Shamim Hasan, 26, and Saidul Islam, 24.
The three chambers used as torture cells have connections to another chamber of concrete, used for hiding in special situations, said police.
According to sources, inhumane torture was carried out to extort ransom by detaining job seekers after providing lucrative advertisements in newspapers.
Kausar Hamid, 27, from Chandpur, was looking for a job due to business losses. He applied after seeing an advertisement in a newspaper.
Describing the incident, Hamid said: "I badly needed a job. I saw the job advertisement in the weekly job news newspaper and sent the resume as per the instruction on May 4.
“On June 28, someone named Sabikur Rahman called me and said that I was initially selected for the job and the final appointment will be made through an oral interview. That is why I came to Mymensingh.”
As soon as he arrived, he realized that he has fallen into the clutches of frauds.
“The criminals detained me and threatened to open my kidneys first. After that, I was tortured overnight in a dark room demanding Tk5 lakh. Unable to bear the torture at one stage, I agreed to pay Tk3 lakh. The next day, I brought Tk1 lakh from home through bKash. Then they released me around 11pm that day,” he added.
Hamid later filed a case last Friday with Kotwali police station. Police then arrested four fraudsters that night.
